Restaurants' at-home sales down almost 2% in December 2024

This was attributed to consumers’ shift towards going out.

Britain’s leading restaurant groups' delivery and takeaway sales decreased to 1.9% year-on-year (YoY) in December 2024, according to CGA by NIQ’s Hospitality at Home Tracker.

“It means at-home sales have now risen for 19 months in a row,” the report said. However, the latest figure falls short of November’s 6.2% increase and marks its lowest point since March.

For the first time in 2024, the growth rate fell slightly below the UK’s general monthly inflation rate of 2.4%, as measured by the Consumer Prices Index.

CGA noted that this drop in December’s figure may reflect consumers’ shift towards going out rather than ordering in over Christmas as their spending confidence increased.

The mild weather and extended holiday breaks also contributed to more consumers' longer periods off work.

Moreover, the report also showed that delivery sales increased by 2.2% like-for-like, whilst takeaway and click-and-collect revenue was flat at 1.4%.

Total delivery and takeaway sales, including from sites opened in the last 12 months, rose by 10.3%.
