Hong Kong approves 940 restaurants for dog-friendly dining
McDonald's, Starbucks, and PizzaExpress are among chains included in the scheme
Over 900 restaurants, including some major fast food chains in Hong Kong, are now allowing dogs in its premises after the government relaxed the 30-year ban.
The relaxing of the rules started on 9 July, with permitted restaurants showing signage designated by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD).
Fast food chain McDonald's has three of its restaurants approved by the FEHD. Coffee chain Starbucks has at least seven of its restaurants with pet-friendly permits. UK-headquartered pizza chain PizzaExpress has three restaurants listed on the FEHD website.
The FEHD received over 2,100 applications, more than its initial target of 1,000. However, only 940 received permits.
FEHD said it is allocating the remaining quotas to waitlisted applicants in the order determined by the earlier ballot results. Information on the newly added food premises will be progressively uploaded to the dedicated webpage after completion of the procedures.
