Pizza emerges as most ordered during World Cup across seven markets
It also ranked amongst the leading cuisines in Switzerland, Belgium, Spain and Canada.
Pizza was the most consistently ordered during the World Cup across seven markets, Just Eat Takeaway.com revealed.
Pizza recorded the strongest cuisine growth in Germany (+27%) and was the number one cuisine in the Netherlands (+22%). It also ranked amongst the leading cuisines in Switzerland, Belgium, Spain and Canada, making it the only cuisine to consistently perform across every market analysed.
In England, Pizza accounted for almost a quarter (24.5%) of all match-day orders during England's Round of 32 victory over DR Congo, almost double the volume of the next most popular cuisine. England's quarter-final against Norway also saw Italian/Pizza orders increase by 7.9%, whilst grocery orders surged by 21.5% as fans stocked up on snacks ahead of kick-off.
Whilst pizza united football fans across markets, local tastes continued to shine through. Mediterranean cuisine performed particularly strongly during Spain's late-night fixtures, grilled food proved especially popular in Switzerland, and Belgian fans gravitated towards traditional frituur favourites during key matches. Elsewhere, co-host Canada appeared to embrace the tournament spirit, with fans showing some culinary solidarity with their neighbours as American food topped the match-day menu.
In northern Europe, sushi was the most popular, with four of the Netherlands' five most-ordered restaurants during World Cup fixtures serving sushi, whilst German consumers also showed a strong appetite for Japanese food.
