Chinese takeaways spike over Christmas and New Year’s Eve
Orders are set to rise further ahead of the Chinese New Year.
Orders for Chinese food more than doubled on both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, according to a report from Just Eat.
Chinese cuisine was also the most searched for on the platform in December, with over 350,000 searches during the month.
The rise in orders is expected to continue as the Chinese New Year approaches in February and March.
Grocery deliveries made up 40% of all Christmas Day orders, driven by last-minute shopping for missing ingredients and desserts.
Sales of pigs in blankets rose steadily in the weeks before Christmas, with 13,000 packs sold in December.
Searches for turkey peaked on 23 and 24 December as people rushed to secure their holiday roasts.
On New Year’s Eve, over 4,500 orders were placed in the final hour, with prosecco and champagne in particular seeing a 300% increase as people prepared to celebrate.
On New Year’s Day, orders shifted toward hydration and wellness, with sales of coconut water and sports drinks rising 132%, totalling more than 3,000 orders as people aimed to recover from the holiday period.
