Global coffee shop market set to hit $290.23b by 2032

Chains such as Starbucks, Dunkin’, Costa Coffee, Tim Hortons, and McCafé continue to lead the market.

The global coffee shop market was valued at $228.12b in 2025 and is projected to reach $290.23b by 2032, rising at an annual rate of 3.5%, according to a report by Maximize Market Research.

Growth in the sector is being driven by increasing coffee consumption, urbanisation, and changing consumer preferences for speciality and premium café experiences.

Major chains such as Starbucks, Dunkin’, Costa Coffee, Tim Hortons, and McCafé continue to lead the industry.

At the same time, independent cafés and artisanal coffee shops are expanding, offering options like organic coffee, cold brews, and experiential café environments that cater to consumers seeking quality local coffee.

In the US, there are over 40,000 branded coffee shops. Starbucks operates more than 16,300 stores nationwide, followed by Dunkin’ with over 9,500 outlets.

Globally, Starbucks has more than 38,000 locations in 80 countries, a figure expected to reach 45,000 by 2030.

Meanwhile, China’s Luckin Coffee has grown rapidly to over 12,000 locations, surpassing Starbucks in store count and highlighting the strength of domestic coffee brands in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.

Europe’s coffee shop market is also expanding, with chains like Costa Coffee and Caffè Nero increasing their presence in major cities.

North America remains the largest regional market, with US coffee shops valued at around $36b and numbering 37,189 locations.

The US is also the largest coffee importer globally, with Starbucks generating $19.16b in revenue despite pandemic-related setbacks.

Europe is currently the fastest-growing market, with an annual growth rate of 2.9% and an expected total of 45,400 branded coffee shops.

The region imports 86% of green coffee beans by volume, and coffee culture is expanding rapidly.

China and India are emerging markets in the APAC region. China’s coffee shop market is projected to reach CNY47.9b by 2032, whilst India’s market is growing, with 1,192 CCD outlets operating across 208 cities.
