Yum China launches ‘green’ KFC stores in Beijing, Hangzhou

The company expects the Green Pioneer Stores are expected to further cut GHG emissions.

Yum China has opened its first KFC Green Pioneer Stores in Hangzhou and Beijing, part of a larger ambition to reach net-zero value chain greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050.

The sustainable stores feature an Internet of Things (IoT) based intelligent energy management system designed to cut energy consumption by about 10% per year, a tubular daylighting system to natural lighting and solar-powered outdoor umbrellas.

Recycled materials, such as ceramic floor tiles manufactured in the process of energy recycling, low-carbon bamboo materials, and leather alternatives made from recycled coffee grounds are also used in the construction and furniture.

The Hangzhou store, notably, features solar panels installed on the roof of the store, estimated to generate about 10,000 kWh of solar power every year, along with an advanced power storage system.

"We are committed to driving meaningful change and pioneering in the restaurant industry towards net-zero emissions. Building Green Pioneer Stores is an important part of our journey," Joey Wat, CEO of Yum China, said in a media release. "We will continue to explore utilization of innovative technologies in restaurant construction and operations to promote sustainable development as well as contribute to the low carbon economy."

Compared with the average GHG emissions of existing KFC stores in 2020, the company expects the Green Pioneer Stores are expected to further cut GHG emissions by approximately 15% per year.

In early April, Yum China launched a “Virtual Green Store” on their KFC app to promote sustainable lifestyles, such as opting out of disposable cutlery and mobile ordering.
