Starbucks restructures employee compensation system in the US
This includes a shift to weekly pay and new channels for employees to receive tips.
Starbucks announced changes to its employee compensation system, which includes a shift to weekly pay, a new performance bonus structure, and the introduction of new job opportunities.
The brand is introducing a performance-based bonus structure on top of existing base pay and benefits. Baristas and shift supervisors can earn up to an additional $1,200 per year ($300 per quarter) when their coffeehouse meets and exceeds certain sales, operational and customer service targets.
Meanwhile, the group is also expanding ways for its partners, the term Starbucks uses for its employees, to receive tips across more ordering and payment channels, including Mobile Order & Pay and when using Scan & Pay at the register. The brand estimates an increase of up to 8% on what staff receive as tips.
Starbucks is also shifting all its US-based employees to a weekly pay system. The brand also announced that it is expanding leadership opportunities within the coffeehouse through the addition of the previously announced coffeehouse coach role, with plans to introduce new positions across U.S. locations.
Coffeehouse coaches are full-time members of management. This role supports Starbucks commitment to fill 90% of retail leadership roles from within.
Starbucks plans to begin rolling out the incentive rewards program and other tip and pay enhancements across U.S. coffeehouses starting in July 2026.
