Mister Donut reopens in China after seven years
The company withdrew from the market in 2019.
Mister Donut has reopened in Shanghai, seven years after it left the country because of rising labour costs and stiff competition.
Duskin Co., Ltd., the Japanese operator of the US-founded doughnut chain, signed a master franchise agreement with Shanghai MeiTianTian Brand Management Co., Ltd. (SMBM) to open its first Mister Donut shop at Global Harbor on 28 September 2026.
According to the agreement, SMBM will open another shop by December, and eventually open 30 by the end of December 2029.
“I am delighted to see the opening of our first shop in East China. We have been expanding the Mister Donut business beyond Japan with the aspiration of bringing delicious products and enjoyable experiences that define the brand to more countries and regions around the world,” Hiroyuki Okubo, Duskin’s President and CEO, said.
The expansion is part of Duskin’s Medium-Term Management Policy 2028, to expand its business in rapidly growing Asian markets whilst adapting our business model to align with each market’s characteristics. Mister Donut is strengthening its presence outside of Japan in countries including Thailand, the Philippines, Taiwan, Indonesia and Singapore.
